Now, he wants 50,000.By Alva JamesJohnsonOrder Reprint of this StoryJanuary 29, 2018 02:48 PMA member of the Board of Equalization in Muscogee County is seeking 50,000 from the city for expenses, lost wages and mental anguish stemming from an unsuccessful attempt to remove him from the board in 2016.Alton Russell says he believes the Board of Tax Assessors effort to remove him from the position was in retaliation for his strong opposition to the Thaw the Freeze property tax initiative rejected by voters that same year.Within days of Mr. Russells appearance before the Columbus City Council, the Board of Tax Assessors and several of its employees initiated a judicial process to have Mr. Russell removed from the Board of Equalization, wrote Russells attorney, Josh McKoon, in an October 24 letter to Mayor Teresa Tomlinson. The motivation for this baseless act was to punish Mr. Russell for airing his views on a matter of public concern. In addition to initiating the action that was ultimately heard by the Muscogee Grand Jury, Mr. Russell was also subjected to another civil action in Superior Court to enjoin him from hearing cases in his role on the Board of Equalization while the meritless removal action was pending before the Grand Jury. The LedgerEnquirer obtained information about the case via an open records request to the city as well as court documents filed with the Superior Court Clerk.Never miss a local story.Sign up today for unlimited digital access to our website, apps, the digital newspaper and more.SUBSCRIBE NOWOn Sept. 22, the Board of Tax Assessors sought to disqualify Russell as a member of the BOE and block his participation in all BOE hearings scheduled for the week of Oct. 17, 2016, according to a Request for Disqualification of a BOE Member filed with the clerks office. The case was postponed in Superior Court while it was heard by a grand jury, and then eventually dismissed, according to court documents. On Oct. 11, 2016, thenSuperior Court Clerk Linda Pierce presented to the grand jury a complaint against Russell that was emailed to her by Deputy Chief Appraiser John Williams, according to an Oct. 25 court document.... The Grand Jury heard evidence on October 11 and October 25, according to the document. After reviewing the evidence, by majority vote, the Grand Jury finds Alton Russell has not failed to perform the duties of a Board of Equalization member. As a result of this finding the Grand Jury does not remove Alton Russell from the board of Equalization. The Muscogee County Board of Equalization, appointed by the grand jury, is the body charged by law with hearing and adjudicating administrative appeals to property values and assessments made by the board of tax assessors. Currently, the board is divided into three groups Board A, Board B and Board C. Each group has three board members and three alternates.Russell, now chairman of the Muscogee County Republican Committee, said he doesnt make the decisions independently, but in consultation with two other board members. He said the rulings are always unanimous, but he was the only BOE member targeted for removal.I was the only one that they said was protaxpayer and that I was not fair, and that I was antigovernment, he said. And to some extent they accused me of taking a bribe, but they kind of backed off of that. It got kind of contentious. When recently asked by the LedgerEnquirer why the BOTA sought Russells removal, Lomax said he did not think it would be appropriate to provide details since the case is already closed. We generally do not comment on any pending or past litigation, so I really dont think were going to be able to provide any further insight, he said. There was a hearing on it, and he was not removed, and from our view point the door is closed. In response to Russells request for 50,000, attorneys representing the city wrote McKoon a Nov. 29 letter denying him compensation. Please be advised that this firm represents the Consolidated Government of Columbus (CCG) and has been asked to respond to the ante litem notice we received concerning your client Alton Russells claim against the Board of Tax Assessors, wrote James C. Clark Jr., of Page, Scrantom, Sprouse, Tucker and Ford law firm. The CCG denies any and all liability for Mr. Russells claim because none of the alleged unconstitutional acts stated in your letter were acts of the CCG.Based on federal law, a county cannot be held liable for alleged constitutional violations, Clark argued.Rather, a county may only be sued for constitutional claims if an individuals rights are deprived pursuant to county policy or custom, he wrote. ... There is no such CCG policy or custom responsible for your clients claims. Please be advised that if you choose to institute legal action against the CCG it will be vigorously defended and all available remedies including the imposition of attorneys fees will be sought against your client, he continued. Any lawsuit alleging these claims against the CCG will be considered frivolous in light of the wellestablished law concerning municipal liability. As such we will pursue bad faith penalties for the filing of same. But McKoon, Russells attorney, believes the request for compensation is justified.Mr. Russell has been on the Board of Equalization for a number of years, he said. There was never any complaint about his conduct or decisions he made until he went down to a meeting of our City Council and exercised his First Amendment right to voice his opinion on the mayors proposal to alter the tax freeze. And then, within 24 hours of that he finds himself subjected to a complaint that required him to retain council and to fight a legal process simultaneously in the Muscogee Grand Jury and the Muscogee Superior Court. It was a lot of time, it was a lot of expense, it was mentally distressing and injurious to his reputation, McKoon added. ... He was put through all of that for no apparent reason other than that some folks in city government were upset that he expressed his opinion on a matter of public concern.McKoon said the ante litem letter was sent to put the city on notice of a potential lawsuit, as required by law.It would certainly be our hope that the matter could be resolved without litigation, he said. We certainly dont want more tax dollars being wasted on this illfated crusade against Mr. Russell. So, at the present time, theres not a lawsuit pending. But Mr. Russell is, obviously, reserving all of his options, and we will pursue those as he deems fit.

commentsFormer primary school headmaster Andrew Melville, 48, avoided jail time over child porn chargesA primary school teacher tried to cover up her bosss arrest on child pornography charges by ordering a janitor to buy all copies of a local newspaper.Head teacher Andrew Melville was yesterday ordered to carry out 150 hours of community service and placed on probation for three years after admitting the offences. But parents voiced their anger after it emerged that a teacher at the school organised a mass purchase of local papers to try to prevent parents finding out about the scandal.Council education chiefs said the attempted coverup was extremely regrettable and insisted the unnamed staff member at Whitecraig School in Musselburgh, East Lothian, had acted on her own initiative.Melville, 48, of Gullane, East Lothian, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for sentencing yesterday after earlier admitting possessing and distributing indecent photographs of children between 2004 and 2005.The former head teacher, who has been placed on the sex offenders register, was suspended last April when the council was made aware of the allegations against him and sacked in July after a disciplinary hearing.Parents yesterday branded the decision to try to hide the truth about Melville from them as a disgrace.Angry mother Tracey Doran, 35, said: Rumours were rife that the janitor had gone to the local shop and bought all the newspapers reporting about Melville when it was first announced.I dont know what they were thinking because the story was all over the television and radio that day, so they were wasting their time and money. But to try and dupe us all like that is a disgrace. Someone should be reprimanded for making that awful decision.Melville was in charge of Whitecraig Primary School, picturedMelville was told by Sheriff Alistair Noble yesterday that his sentence was appropriate in view of his exemplary service as a teacher, the impact on his family and the fact that a relatively small number of images were involved. The sheriff, who spent three minutes looking at the child porn images, told Melville that instead of a relatively short period of custody, a better approach was to place him on probation with special conditions.Melville, who is married with three teenage children, was found to have 457 child porn images stored on computer, most of them of girls between the ages of eight and 15.His lawyer, Colm Dempsey, said Melville had begun receiving the images at a time when his job was not fulfilling and he had become bored. An East Lothian Council spokesman said: I can confirm that a teacher at Whitecraig Primary, acting upon her own initiative and without consulting East Lothian Council, asked the schools janitor to buy up all copies of the East Lothian Courier from shops in Whitecraig when the news about Mr Melville broke in March 2008.The council does not condone this action and views it as extremely regrettable. The authority did not confirm if the teacher involved had been disciplined.Melville had undergone all statutory disclosure procedures before his appointment at Whitecraig in 2007, the council insisted. The police confirmed that no images of East Lothian children were involved, the spokesman added.Share or comment on this articleMost watched News videos

The data shows requests to access websites, not visits to them. There are 8,500 computers on the parliamentary network, which are used by MPs, peers, their staff and staff of both Houses.UK news in picturesUK news in pictures151 6 March 2018A police officer stands guard outside a branch of the Italian chain restaurant Zizzi close to The Maltings shopping centre in Salisbury, which was closed in connection to the ongoing major incident sparked after a man and a woman were found critically ill on a bench at the shopping centre on 4 MarchAFPGetty251 5 March 2018Gary Oldman, winner of the Best Actor award for Darkest Hour, poses with his award in the press room during the 90th Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood Highland Center.Getty351 4 March 2018Great Britains Andrew Pozzi celebrates winning the mens 60m hurdles final as Aries Merritt of United States looks dejected during the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Arena Birmingham.GettyIAAF451 3 March 2018People playing with their sledges in Greenwich Park, east London, as the cold weather continues around the country.PATheresa May delivers a speech about her vision for Brexit at Mansion House.Reuters651 1 March 2018The Couple, a sculpture by Sean Henry, braves the snow in NewbigginByTheSea in Northumberland, as storm Emma, rolling in from the Atlantic, looks poised to meet the Beast from the Easts chilly Russian air.PA WirePA Images751 28 February 2018The scene on the M80 Haggs in Glasgow, as the highest level of weather warning has been issued for Scotland and Ireland as forecasters warn of blizzardlike conditions. WhatsappMy analyst and I grew more intimately connected each week of treatment...but I never saw this indecent proposal coming. Its the waning moments of my fourth session with a new therapist. Im holding back and she knows it. My entire body feels tense, not ideal for the setting. I try to relax, but the plush leather couch crumples under me when I shift, making the movements extraordinary. Ive barely looked into my therapists blue eyes at all, and yet I think the hour has gone very well. Of course it has. On the surface, when the patient has been highly selective of the discussion topics, therapy always resembles a friendly gettogether.Well, my therapist, Lori, says, the millisecond after I become certain our time is up and I might be in the clear. I dont think I should let you go until weve at least touched on what was put out there at the end of last weeks session.I so supremely wanted this not to come up. My eyelids tighten, my mouth puckers to the left, and my head tilts, as though Im asking her to clarify. When you said youre attracted to me, she continues.Oh, yeah, I say. That.Back in session three Lori was trying to build my selfesteem, the lack of which is one of the reasons Im in treatment. Within the confines of my family, Ive always been the biggest target of ridicule. We all throw verbal darts around as though were engaged in a massive, drunken tournament at a bar, but the most poisonous ones seem to hit me the most often, admittedly somewhat a consequence of my own sensitivity. Ive been told it was historically all part of an effort to toughen me up, but instead I was filled with towering doubts about my own worth. And since 2012, when I gave up a stable, tenured teaching career for the wildly inconsistent life of a freelance writer, Ive had great difficulty trusting my own instincts and capabilities. I told Lori that I wish I was better at dealing with lifes daily struggles instead of constantly wondering if Ill be able to wade through the thick. She quickly and convincingly pointed out that I work rather hard and am, ultimately, paying my bills on time, that I have friends, an appreciation for arts and culture, and so on. In short, I am, in fact, strong, responsible and pretty good at life. Then Lori heightened the discussion a bit. I also feel that it is your sensitivity that makes you a great catch out there in the dating world, she said, to which I involuntarily smiled, blushed and quickly buried my chin in my chest. I was too insecure and too single to handle such a compliment from a beautiful woman. Why are you reacting that way? Lori asked.I shrugged my shoulders, only half looking up.Is it because youre attracted to me?I laughed a little, uncomfortably. How did you know? She gently explained she could tell the day I walked into her office for the first time, after I flashed a bright smile and casually asked where she was from. Now, a week after dropping that bomb, Lori asks, So, why havent we talked about it?I was hoping to avoid it, I suppose. I tell her the whole notion of having the hots for a therapist is such a sizable clich that I was embarrassed to admit it. For Christs sake, I say, throwing my hands up, Tony Soprano even fell in love with his therapist.Lori snorts, rolls her eyes. I knew you were going to say that.I smile, shake my head and look around the room, denying acceptance of my own ridiculous reality. Its OK, Lori says, grinning. We can talk about this in here.I look again at her stark blue eyes, prevalent under dark brown bangs, the rest of her hair reaching the top of her chest, which is hugged nicely by a fitted white tee under an open buttondown. She jogs often, Id come to find out, which explains her petite figure and ability to probably pull off just about any outfit of her choosing.I still cant speak, so she takes over.Do you think youre the first client thats been attracted to their therapist? she asks rhetorically. Ive had other clients openly discuss their feelings, even their sexual fantasies involving me.What? I cackle, beginning to feel as though Ive moseyed onto the set of a porno. Its true, she says, acknowledging her desk. Whats yours? Do you bend me over and take me from behind?Nailed it.If thats what youre thinking, its OK, she goes on, earnestly, explaining that shes discussed sexual scenarios with her clients before so as to normalize the behavior and not have them feel their own thoughts are unnatural. By showing the patient a level of acceptance, she hopes to facilitate a more comfortable atmosphere for the work her painfully accurate pseudonym for psychotherapy.I take a second to let the red flow out of my face, and ponder what she said. Im a little unsure about this whole technique, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. So I go home, incredibly turned on and completely unashamed. One of the great breakthroughs Ive had in the thirteen months since I began seeing Lori (who agreed to participate in this article, but requested that her full name not be published) is a new ability to accept the existence of dualities in life. For instance, Ive always had a tremendous sense of pride that, if it doesnt straddle the line of arrogance, certainly dives into that hemisphere from time to time. Im great at seeing flaws in others and propping myself up above them by smugly observing my character strengths. Ive never liked that about myself, but the harder concept to grasp is the fact that I can be so egotistical while also stricken with such vast quantities of insecurity. In treatment I came to realize that all people have contradictions to their personalities. Theres the insanely smart guy who cant remotely begin to navigate a common social situation, the charitable girl who devotes all her time to helping strangers, but wont confront issues in her own personal relationships. In my case, my extreme sensitivity can make me feel fabulous about the aspects of myself that I somehow know are good (my artistic tastes) and cause deep hatred of those traits I happen to loathe (the thirty pounds I could stand to lose). My next session with Lori is productive. We speak about relationships Ive formed with friends and lovers, and how my family may have informed those interactions. One constant is that I put crudely high expectations on others, mirroring those thrown upon me as a kid. Im angered when people dont meet those expectations, and absolutely devastated when I dont reach them. Lori points out that it must be exhausting trying to be so perfect all the time. I am much more comfortable than I was the week prior, and can feel myself being more candid. Im relieved that the whole beingattractedtomytherapist thing doesnt come up.Then, a week later, Lori mentions it, and I become tense again.I thought Id be able to move past it, I say, adding, We aired it out, and its fine.As definitive as Im trying to sound, Lori is just as defiant.Im glad you feel that way, she begins, but I think you owe yourself some kudos. This kind of therapy, she shares, isnt something just anyone can take on. Such honest discussion doesnt simply happen, it takes tremendous guts, and Lori can see that I am dealing with it relatively well, so I should praise my own efforts.Shit, we both should be proud of ourselves, she says. Its not easy on the therapist either, you know. Why not?Because talking openly about sex is risky at any time, much less with a client. She explains that therapists are warned any semblance of intimacy can be easily misconstrued. We learn in our training to not personally disclose, for example, she says, but adds that, occasionally, transparency can be helpful.Still, with you, she continues, until I raised the question, I didnt know for sure that you would go with it for all I knew youd run out of here and never come back to risk being so uncomfortable again.Shes building my confidence more, and Im learning that I play a much bigger role in how my life is conducted than I often realize. My treatment wouldnt be happening if I werent enabling it.Then she says, And dont think its not nice for me to hear that a guy like you thinks Im beautiful.Crippled by the eroticism of the moment, and combined with the prevailing notion that no woman this stunning could ever be romantically interested in me, I flounder through words that resemble, Waitwhat? If we were somehow at a bar together, and you came over and talked to me, she says, then flips her palms up innocently, who knows?I laugh again and tell her thered be almost no chance of me approaching her because Id never feel like I had a shot in hell.Well, thats not the circumstances were in, she says. But you might. Who knows?Im confused Is she really attracted to me or is this some psychotherapeutic ruse? Im frustrated I told her I didnt really want to talk about it. Shouldnt she be more sensitive to my wants here? Im angry Is she getting an ego boost out of this? Most of all, I dont know what the next step is Am I about to experience the hottest thing thats ever happened to a straight male since the vagina was invented? There were two ways to find out:1) Discontinue the therapy, wait for her outside her office every day, follow her to a hypothetical happy hour and ask her out, or2) Keep going to therapy. A week later, Im physically in the meeting room with Lori, but mentally I havent left the recesses of my mind.Where are you today? she asks, probably noticing my eyes roving around the room.I dont know. Are you still grappling with the sexual tension between us?Here we go again.Yes, I say, with a bit of an edge in my voice, and I dont know what to do about it.Lori, ever intently, peers into my eyes, wrinkles her mouth and slightly shakes her head.Do you want to have sex with me? she asks.We both know the answer to that question. All I can do is stare back.Lets have sex, she announces. Right here, right now. What? I respond, flustered.Lets go! she says a little louder, opening up her arms and looking around as if to say the office is now our playground, and, oh, the rollicking fun wed have mixing bodily fluids. No, I tell her, You dont mean that. What if I do? she shoots back. Would you have sex with me, now, in this office?Of course not.Why of course not? How do I know for sure that you wont take me if I offer myself to you?I wouldnt do that.Thats what I thought, she says, and tension in the room decomposes. Mike, I dont feel that you would do something that you think is truly not in our best interest, which is exactly why I just gave you the choice. Her offer was a lesson in empowerment, helping me prove that I have an innate ability to make the right choices, even if Id so desperately prefer to make the wrong one.I see what she means. Im awfully proud of myself, and its OK to be in this instance. Im gaining trust in myself, and confidence to boot. But, as the dualities of life dictate, Im successfully doing the work with a daring therapist, while at the same time not entirely convinced she isnt in need of an ethical scrubbing. I dont have another session with Lori for nearly three months, because she tooka personal leave from her place of employment. When our sessions finally resumed, I could not wait to tell her about my budding relationship with Shauna.Ten minutes into my first date with Shauna right about the time she got up from her bar stool and said she was going to the can I knew she would, at the very least, be someone I was going to invest significant time in. She was as easy to talk to as any girl Id ever been with, and I found myself at ease. Plans happened magically without anxietyinducing, twentyfourhour waits between texts. Her quick wit kept me entertained, and I could tell by the way she so seriously spoke about dancing, her chosen profession, that she is passionate about the art form and mighty talented too. Shauna is beautiful, with flawless hazel eyes and straight dark hair, spunky bangs and a bob that matches her alwaysupbeat character. She is a snazzy dresser and enjoys a glass of whiskey with a side of fried pickles and good conversation as much as I do.Things escalated quickly, but very comfortably, and since wed both been in our fair share of relationships, we knew the true power of honesty and openness. So upon the precipice of my return to therapy I told Shauna about Lori, and admitted to having mixed feelings about what I was getting back into. I told her I was at least moderately uncertain if my mental health was Loris numberone concern since she always seemed to find the time to mention my attraction to her.The first two sessions of my therapeutic reboot had gone great. Lori appeared genuinely thrilled that I was dating Shauna and could see how happy I was. I wasnt overwhelmed with sexual tension in the new meeting room, though it wasnt actually spoken about, and in the back of my mind I knew it was just a matter of time before it would start to affect my ability to disclose my thoughts to Lori again. Then, while attempting to ingratiate myself with my new girlfriends cat by spooning food onto his tiny dish on the kitchen floor, I hear my phone ding from inside the living room. You got a text, babe, Shauna says. Its from Lori.Im so impressed with you and the work youre doing Shauna reads off my phone from inside the living room, inquisitively, and not happily. I stuff the cat food back into the Tupperware and toss it into the refrigerator. I make my way into the living room, angry at myself for not changing the settings on my new iPhone to disallow text previews on the locked screen. Shaunas walking too, and we meet near the kitchen door. Whats this? she says, holding up the phone. Your therapist texts you?I take the phone from Shauna and say the most obvious, clichsounding thing: Its not what it seems. As I text back a curt thanks, Shauna tells me shes going to ask her sister, a therapist herself, if its OK to text patients.Dont do that. I say, a little more emphatically. I promise, this is nothing to be worried about. Were not doing anything wrong. I explain that Loris just trying to build my selfesteem. The only reason Im even bringing this up is because you said you werent sure about her in the first place, Shauna reminds me. I can tell she regrets looking at my phone without my permission, but I completely understand her feelings. At my next session I tell Lori that Shauna saw her text and wasnt thrilled about it.She probably feels cheated on to some degree, Lori says. A relationship between a therapist and a patient can oftentimes seem much more intimate than the one between a romantic couple.Lori goes on to point out that the reason she feels we can exchange texts, blurring the lines between patientdoctor boundaries a hot topic in the psychotherapy world these days is because she trusts that Ill respect her space and privacy. Youve proven that much to me, she says.On my walk home, instead of being angry at Lori, I understand her thinking behind the text. But Im also nervous about how Lori and Shauna can ever coexist in my life.Isnt therapy supposed to ameliorate my anxiety? A week later, Lori begins our session by handing me a printout explaining the psychotherapeutic term erotic transference written by Raymond Lloyd Richmond, PhD. It says that erotic transference is the patients sense that love is being exchanged between him or herself and the therapist the exact sensation I was experiencing with Lori, of which she was astutely aware.According to Richmond, one of the primary reasons people seek therapy is because something was lacking in their childhood family life, perhaps unconditional nurturing guidance and protection. Upon feeling noticed and understood by a qualified therapist, sometimes a patient can be intoxicated by their therapists approval of them. A patient may in turn contemplate that a love is blossoming between them, and, in fact, it sort of is.From an ethical standpoint, Richmond argues all therapists are bound to love their patients, for therapists are committed to willing the good of all clients by ensuring that all actions within psychotherapy serve the clients need to overcome the symptoms which brought them into treatment. This takes genuine care and acceptance on their part. However, a patient can easily confuse the love they feel with simple desire. Theyre not quite in love with their therapist, so much as they yearn for acceptance from someone, and in those sessions they just happen to be receiving it from their doctor.Lori tells me that, all along, she has been working with what I gave her and that because I flirted with her a bit, she used that to her advantage in the treatment. In employing countertransference indicating that she had feelings for me she was keeping me from feeling rejected and despising my own thoughts and urges.Theres two people alone in a room together, and if theyre two attractive people, why wouldnt they be attracted to each other? says Dr. Galit Atlas. A psychoanalyst whos had her own private practice for fifteen years, Dr. Atlas has an upcoming book titled The Enigma of Desire: Sex, Longing and Belonging in Psychoanalysis, and I sought her as an independent source for this essay to help me understand Loris therapeutic strategies.Dr. Atlas explains that there are certain boundaries that cannot be crossed between therapist and patient under any circumstances like having sex with them, obviously. But many other relationship borders can be mapped out depending on the comfort level of the therapist, as long as they stay within the scope of the professions ethics, which complicates the discussion surrounding erotic transference. As a therapist, I have a role, Dr. Atlas says. My role is to protect you. She says it is incumbent on the therapist to not exploit the patient for the therapists own good, but admits that the presence of erotic transference in therapy brings about many challenges. Attraction is part of the human condition, she observes. In therapy, the question then is: What do you do with that? Do you deny it? Do you talk about it? How do you talk about it without seducing the patient and with keeping your professional ability to think and to reflect?I ask her about the benefits of exploring intimacy in therapy, and Dr. Atlas quickly points out that emotional intimacy though not necessarily that of the sexual brand is almost inevitable and required. An intimate relationship with a therapist can be a reparative experience repairing childhood wounds but mostly its about helping the patient to experience and tolerate emotional intimacy, analyzing the clients anxieties about being vulnerable and every mechanism one uses in order to avoid being exposed.Dr. Atlas says this topic speaks to every facet of the therapeutic relationship, regardless of gender or even sexual orientation, because intimacy reveals emotional baggage that both the patient and therapist carry with them into the session. But this isnt a symmetrical relationship, and the therapist is the one who holds the responsibility.Freud said that a healthy person should be able to work and to love, she says. In some ways therapy practices both, and in order to change the patient will have to be known by the therapist. That is intimacy. In order to be able to be vulnerable, both parties have to feel safe. After I briefly explain all that has gone on between me and Lori, Dr. Atlas steadfastly says she does not want to judge too harshly why and how everything came to pass in my therapy. I dont know your therapist, and I dont know your history, she says. But she offers that I should explore the possibility that I might have created and admitted my sexual adoration of Lori because one of my fears is to be ignored, not noticed. Then I offer: Maybe this essay is being written for the same reason.Exactly.Maybe I wanted to interview Lori about erotic transference in my therapy sessions for that same reason as wellto stand out as the most amazingly understanding patient ever. I want to be very clear that this was never about feeding my own ego, Lori says about her approach to my treatment. We were always doing this in your best interest.Im in Loris office, a tape recorder rolling and a pad and pen in my hands.I felt I was doing a disservice to you if I didnt out what I felt was weighing on us, which, honestly, felt like a heavy secret, she says, pointing out that she discussed my therapeutic process for many hours in her required supervision meetings. In order for Lori to advance in her field as a social worker, she has to attend 3,000 conference hours with another professional to go over casework kind of like therapy quality control. We talk about all of this during one of my scheduled sessions, for the entire hour and go over by a few minutes, too.Lori says that when she began her career as a social worker, she decided she wasnt going to shy away from any subjects. Its typical for a client to have a habitual desire to sweep things under the rug, she observes, especially about taboo topics. It can become a cycle of behavior that Lori seeks to break.I refer back to the time when, unprovoked, she brought up my attraction to her.She says she mentioned it to avoid what therapists call doorknobbing, which is when a patient will purposely mention some huge reveal right at the end of a session so as to sidestep a lengthy conversation about it.My only question for you is, was I wrong for bringing it up? she asks. Only you can answer that.Loris great at forcing me to reflect.I guess when I said I was over it and could move on, that was an example of my strict blackandwhite thinking, I say, throwing back some language shes used often to describe my challenge in accepting dualities. In my mind, I was either attracted to her and shouldnt see her anymore, or I wasnt attracted to her and could still have her be my therapist. There was no in between.I realize now that she wasnt wrong for mentioning my feelings for her, even when I didnt want her to. Lori noticed that I was frustrated with myself and wanted me to know that an attraction to a therapist is so normal and happens so frequently that there are technical terms for it.I turn my attention towards the presence of countertransference in our session. Im trying to come up with an actual question here, but, really, I just want her to confirm her feelings for me are real. So I say, referring to her feelings, with a great degree of difficulty, Its funny that they seem genuine to this day. They are genuine, Lori says, adding a moment later: I think it might be a good idea if we explore why our discussing it suggests a lack of authenticity. It doesnt, necessarily, I begin, then stammer through a few sentences, worried I might offend her by implying shes been dishonest. I finally settle on, I guess it comes back to my selfesteem issues. Why would a beautiful woman think Im attractive?Lying in bed with Shauna a few months into our relationship, I ask her what she thought about me the moment she first saw me. Im fishing for a compliment. But we met on Tinder and I just hope that seeing me in person wasnt some kind of letdown for her after swiping right on my handpicked glamour shots. Obviously she isnt going to say something so awful after having committed to me for so long. Its a slamdunk ego boost. She says she liked the fact that I was wearing a blazer and a tie on a first date. She adds that I was a little shorter than she anticipated, but was content with the two of us at least being the same exact height. What did you think when you first saw me? she asks, turning it around, naturally.Staying committed to my honestyatallcosts policy, I say, I thought you were really beautiful, but not to the point where I was intimidated by you, which was very important because if I was, you would have gotten a very unconfident version of me, and we probably wouldnt have hit it off as well as we did.Shauna thinks about that for a second, and eventually nods OK.I explain that my insecurity could often get the better of me in dating situations. It was easy to convince myself that Id be rejected by the girl I was with, especially if I thought she was out of my league. I would then slip into a nervous and reserved state that isnt at all reflective of my true self.Im essentially saying that I was so thrilled to not find Shauna so extraordinarily pretty that I couldnt accept her being on a date with me. That thought made so much sense at the time I said it, but Ive since come to realize it is as ridiculous as it is insulting. After ten months of being with Shauna, Im still completely floored by her, on every level, including a physical one. It gives me great pride to walk into a room with her, and I dont imagine that changing. Therefore, she actually did meet a confident version of me. The way people look doesnt drastically change in ten months but a persons perception of self can. It seems my emotional workouts in erotic transference were just beginning to produce results. People fuck up, Lori informs me during one winter session. Therapists have slept with clients before, just like politicians have had sex with their interns. But, so you have a full understanding of how this works, we can date. She explains the parameters as outlined in the social workers code of ethics. One of the many stipulations is that we wouldnt be able to see each other, under any circumstances, for at least two years before dating. She tells me she loves her job, and theres no way she would ever sacrifice my safety or her career for anything, so she would strictly follow all the dictated rules. If you truly want to date me, there is the option. But its ultimately up to you.I know what shes doing here putting the onus on me, just like last year when she said we could have sex. The difference this time is the answer I want to give is on par with all of my involuntary urges.I dont want to stop the work were doing, I say. At this point, its far too valuable to me, and, really, I know very little about you. Shes beautiful, exercises, is smart, funny, professional, enjoys good TVand thats about it. Aside from whether or not wed even both be single in two years, and if wed be in the correct mind frame to explore a relationship, there are several other things Im considering here: Would Lori and I really be compatible in every way? Would she ever see me as a lover, a partner, an equal, and not a patient? Could I ever reveal a detail about myself, or even just a shitty day of work, without wondering if she was picking it apart and analyzing it?Frankly, all those questions could be answered in the positive. But, even if I wasnt in a happy relationship Shauna makes this choice much easier, for sure I wouldnt go that route. Id be out a therapist. Its a beautiful spring night in New York and only sidewalk seating will do. Shauna and I are out to dinner at a restaurant near her Queens apartment, and were both in good spirits. The weather and the alcohol consumption are partly to blame for that, but, on cue with the seasons change, I feel Ive turned an emotional corner. Work payments that were past due are finally finding their way into my bank account. As it turns out, my shortterm money troubles were not an indication that I had no business being a writer, or that my life changeup was as irresponsible as unprotected sex at fourteen years old.Id told Lori as much that afternoon. I took a mental step back from my current situation and realized that in spite of my recent hardships, I was succeeding. I summarize my session for Shauna, who nods in agreement, lovingly pointing out that shes had the same challenging freelancer experiences as a dancer.Youre doing great, babe, she says matteroffactly.Thank you. That means a lot, I respond. I guess if Im going to be a writer I just have to accept all this and have faith in myself. The way Lori put it was, You just have to go allin.Good, Shauna says. You should listen to the women in your life.

Resource FlickrVulcana reached the peak of her strength and popularity in about 1910. On May 29, 1913 at Haggars Theatre in Llanelly, she lifted a challenge bell that rival strongwoman harda failed to raise after twentyfive minutes of trying. Vulcana was triumphant in France, impressing the lHalterophile Club de France with her feats of strength, earning her a medal from the Father of French Bodybuilding, Professor Edmond Desbonnet, and the cover of La Sante par les Sports. She was honored with over one hundred medals throughout her career. Her bestauthenticated feats were bent press with her right hand of at least 124? lb (56.5 kg), with some authorities accepting a press of 145 lb (66 kg).Although her power stunts were not especially innovative, being the typical for strongwomen, Vulcana was the first woman who included in her repertoire the unique stunt, socalled Tomb of Hercules which had been performed just by few powerful men. This act consisted in supporting a big platform placing on the abdomen of the performer who leans backwards on the floor by the hands and legs. The wonder is that two horses with their attendants stood on that platform and leave it for a few seconds. She struggled against the custom of wearing corsets considering this part of womens equipment to be unnatural that was an instrument of torturing grandmothers of that epoch. There are a lot of legends about her strength and courage. It is said that once, in Paris, she caught a thief, grabbed him and took him to a police precinct. In 1898, at the age of thirteen, she stopped a runaway horse in Bristol. She freed a wagon stuck in Maiden Lane, London in October 1901 by lifting it before astonished witnesses. She rescued two children from drowning in the River Usk in July 1901, for which she received an award in gratitude. On June 4, 1921 the Garrick Theatre in Edinburgh caught fire on an evening of the Society Athletes performance. Vulcana risked her life to save another acts horses, and came away with serious burns on her head. For this she won commendations and an award.Vulcana and Atlas moved permanently to London in the 1920s, and retired from performance in 1932. Vulcana was hit by a car in London in 1939, and was conscious when she heard her own death pronounced. She suffered brain damage, but partially recovered, and briefly outlived Atlas and her youngest daughter, both of whom also died in 1946.Kate was as strong as she was beautiful but with none of that aggressive assertion of muscular development which leads many to believe that strength and maidenly modesty are an impossible combination. Vulcana convinced women to be in charge of their own physical development. The Health and Strength magazine in 1904 said that Vulcana was a veritable Venus in form.Marina Lurs in 1908.Photo from the Russian magazine Nauka i ZhiznMarina Lurs Maria Loorberg (scenic name Marina Lurs), one of the strongest women of the Russian Empire in the 1900s 1910s. She was born in 1881, in Tallinn (Estonia), and passed away in 1922. Maria had a solid build: weight of 80 kg and height of 168 cm. She was trained by the weightlifting enthusiast Adolph Andrushkevich, who was the first trainer of the famous strongman George Gakkensmidt. Maria had been training since 1903 and later, she started performing strength stunts and participating in wrestling championships. Since 1905, Maria appeared in carnivals and circuses of Estonia and other provinces of Russia with her feats with weights.Maria was capable to lift two men, weighing 66 kilograms each, with one hand and to move a man suspended with a strap which she held with the teeth. Marina Lurs easily joggled with two 70lbs32kg dumbbells, pushed up 176lbs90kg with two arms, and snatched 106lbs48kg by one hand. On August 27, 1913 she established the record: she planted her arms firmly on the knees and maintained 13 people on her legs. The total weight 880 kg! (The famous male athlete Arthur Saxon managed to hold 1040 kg on his legs.) Lurs easily joggled with two 32kg dumbbells, pushed up 90kg with two arms, and snatched 48kg by one hand. The audience was dazzled by the act in which Marina was spinning a yoke with human loads on its tips. Her artistic name Lurs is probably a female version of the name of her fellowcountryman, famous strongman Georg Lurich. In her epoch she enjoyed an enormous popularity, and went known as a female Kalev (Kalev is a national hero of Estonia). And she is still honored in Estonia as a strongwoman and a great wrestler. The Russian magazine Hercules reported in 1913: Special attention is attracted by a female power athlete Marina Lurs. She is perfectly built and has massive but gracefully outlined musculature. Lurs performs weight tricks, which would be good for a strong male athlete. Ivan Lebedev, athleticism and wrestling promoter, wrote about her: She works as a Hercules in an old kind circus. Each her trick is perfectly finished each her move expresses strength. However, at the same time, the body of Marina Lurs is not even coarse but it impresses you by its soft plastic lines Lets put pictures of Marina Lurs on circus placards and let all town ladies see this daughter of Eve who is deservedly proud by her strength and harmony.Lillian Leitzel. Photo from the resourse LHartLillian Leitzel. Alitza Pelikan (Lillian Leitzel). Beautiful strongwoman and acrobat. Lillian Leitzel was born in Breslau, Germany on January 2, 1892 in a family of circus performers. Her father was a Hungarian army officer and theater performer. Her mother was a Czech circus acrobat. She weighed just 43 kg (95 Lbs) with the height 143 cm (49). Unlike other stronwomen, this little lady was famous by her inconceivable acrobatic numbers which required literally herculean strength.Although she had been welleducated and had prepared to pursue a career as a concert pianist, she joined her mothers aerobatic circus group, the Leamy Ladies. In 1910, she came to the United States with the circus troupe and performed with Barnum and Bailey. The group later dissolved and its member returned to Europe, but Leitzel continued to attempt to perform in the American vaudeville circuit. In South Bend, Indiana, she was seen by an agent of the Ringling Brothers who offered her a contract. When Ringling and Barnum and Bailey merged, she became a huge star and a headline performer for the circus.Leitzels act included onearmed plunges, momentarily dislocating the shoulder during each plunge. She would flip her body over her shoulder repeatedly, sometimes hundreds of times in a feat of endurance, encouraging the audience to count each one in unison. She was best known for her flirting rapport with the audience.Being just four feet, nine inches, she was also famous for her demanding personality and temper. Although pursued by many wealthy suitors, she married a series of circus individuals and never had any children. Her last marriage was in 1928 with the circus trapeze performer Alfredo Codona. On February 13, 1931, she fell to the ground from her rigging while performing in Copenhagen, Denmark when the swivel that held the rope in place crystallized and snapped. She and Codona had been performing in Europe separately, and he rushed to Copenhagen. They boarded a train to return to Berlin where Codona had a commitment. However, she died on February 15, two days after the fall, aged 39.Elvira Sansoni and her Sisters . The sisters The sisters Sansoni, and first of them, Elvira, worked in the Circus Rancy performing in spectacles of strength. Usually they worked with weights between 36 and 68 kilograms (80 150 pounds). One of the stunts consisted in leaning feet and hands on the floor backwards, forming an arch and supporting a little orchestra on the chest: a womanpianist with a piano and a man touching the violin. In the placard there you can see also maintaining three men on her shoulders: a seated one and two others hanging on the bar. She also was good in playing with cannon balls. Her performances attracted a lot of attention and she became very popular and famous in the world.Marie Ford. She was born in 1900, in the town of Olean, in the New York state, USA. Having 163 cm (54) and 59 kg (130 Lbs) she was very versatile athlete she participated in powerlifting, boxing, wrestling, marathon she also worked in the circus as an acrobat. Marie Ford was unusually for that time great female athlete. The remarkable development of her shoulders and biceps enabled her to perform such feats as driving stakes with the 16pound mallet, like a really strong man and lifting the front wheels of the model T. Ford, so a jack could be placed under the front axle. In one of her spectacles, she caught a nail and punched them into a wood board to an inch (two and a half centimeters). While she travelled all over North America with her spectacles, she challenged any woman or man in the audience to a wrestling or boxing match (for male volunteers for boxing, it was the restriction though, to have about the same weight and not to be a boxerprofessional). As her trainer said, in view of her unusual strength and perfect boxing techniques, it didnt seem possible that any woman could defeat her in a finish boxing match.Especially spectacular were boxing matches between small Marie and sturdy rustic women from the American Middle West who had been hardened in physical work and didnt shun mens activities. Those women usually broke straight through and pressed hard on Marie who sidestepped the attacks very adroitly and allured her opponents into exhausting bustle. As soon as the opponent had exhausted and embarrassed and the heat of the audience reached culmination, Marie managed to duck under her big opponent and delivered her master stroke crushing uppercut to the jaw. That usually was a final of the bout the opponent was either knockout or unable to continue.By boxing skills and techniques she could be compared to the best male boxers. Actually, Marie Ford was a founder of contemporary pancration, socalled mixed martial arts combination of boxing and wrestling. When competing in this combat style with volunteers from the audience, Marie used a tactics of contemporary MMA fighters: she first softened the opponent with accurate powerful punches from weird angles and then (if the opponent hadnt been knocked out yet) vigorously grabbed himher (usually by the neck), threw down and pinned. At those times, they wrestled just for a pin rather than for a submission.Rustic SheHercules. Agafia Zavidna (Zavidnaya) (18901935) outstanding Ukrainian strongwoman of natural gifts she easily pressed 72pound weights by her little fingers a phaeton with passengers was moving over a platform lying on her chest she successfully wrestled against men. Being a student of the great Russian wrestler Ivan Poddubny, Agafia at the age of 17 became a real giant and even physically exceeded her mentor she was 63 (190cm) and 330Lbs (150kg) her breasts were so big than stretched below her waist. For six years Agafia worked in the wrestlers troupe. She performed strength feats. She pushed up two 35Lb weights, arched her body forming a bridge and holding a platform with eight men she was spinning a rail with four men on each side she was placed a big stone on her chest being struck and broken with a sledgehammer by two men. Zavidnaya easily tore iron chains and twisted an iron bar making a spring of it she lifted a chair with a man sitting on it just by her teeth. She willingly and successfully wrestled men such wrestling matches were supplements to her tricks with weights (women didnt dare to wrestle her). After demonstrations of superhuman abilities of the Rustic SheHercules, a master of ceremonies solemnly said, In front of you this is the strongest and the most dangerous woman in the world who is able to topple any man. Agafia Zavidnaya challenges men in the auditorium! If a real man sits here we invite him to come out to the arenaRead more about Agafia Zavidna in the article Ukrainian HerculesLuisita Leers. Luise (nee Krokel) was born in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1909. A physically powerful woman, she acquired fame with an elegant and unusual aerial acrobatic and strength acts. Luisita never knew her biological father, who left the family when she was two years old. Her mother remarried with Guido Krokel, an aerial contortionist. Guido took care of Luisitas artistic education without too much tenderness and made of her an extraordinarily strong female athlete able to hold her own in the LeersArvelloss troupe various exhibitions of strength. Luisita made her professional debut at age 11, on March 8, 1920 in Cologne (Koln), working with the troupe on the Roman Rings (live chain of aerial acrobats). Soon, she was able to accomplish onearm planche and iron cross (standing on an arm, which were then supposed to belong exclusively to a male repertoire) and to hold with one arm her hanging stepfather. Meanwhile, she was building a solo trapeze act in which to display her unusual strength. She began her solo career in 1926. Her remarkable trapeze feats quickly drew headlines. It took her to some of the worlds most prestigious circuses and variety theaters, from the Wintergarten and the Scala in Berlin to the Roxy in New York, with a fouryear stint with Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey from 192833. There, she occupied center ring in a program that was often unusually rich in stellar aerialists, including Winnie Colleano, the Codonas, the SiegristSilbons, and Lillian Leitzel, the undisputed star of the show. In 1936 she returned to Germany and soon her circus career was overIron Martha. Marta Farra (Iron Martha) was born in 1903 in Vienna, Austria. Her maiden name was Martha Khan. She weighed just 55 kilograms. Her parents were circus acrobats, and since she was a baby Marta learned to be an equilibrist and to accomplish somersaults. In 1924, she proclaimed herself to be the strongest woman of the world she was capable to lift a platform of 3500 pound (1587 kilograms) to 75 centimeters over the floor. There is the famous photograph where she can be seen trying to lift a young elephant standing on a platform. In reality, however, it turned out later that the stunt with the platform was just a trick. Besides powerlifting she practiced in freestyle wrestling and participated in some wrestling matches. This is what she said herself: I am the strongest woman in the world I understand it sounds disputable but I prove it every day that I ma a real strongwoman. If you look at me and say weaker sex, I will prove the opposite. Louis Cyr, the avowed iron master, held two tons on his back but he weighed 160kg. My weight is just 60 kg and I can hold 1,700kg on my shoulder. Calculate now who is strongest of the two. Of course I dont demonstrate my strength to everyone in the street. But newspapers call me Atlas in skirt and WomanHercules. Give me a horse shoe and I straighten it by bare hands give me a piece of steel and I will shape anything of it. And nobody could portray me as a goggleeyed monster with swelled veins spoiling my appearance. I am beautiful, any model would be happy to have such a nice face as mine. But very few have such a perfect body as I do! I think, only athletically developed women are truly beautiful and only weight exercises can make a woman beautiful!Testing durability of Ada AshAda Ash.This powerful blonde was born in 1906, in Hamilton, Ohio (USA). She was surprisingly short, her height was just 153 cm. Around the decade of 1930s he worked in diverse spectacles with strength stunts. In one of these spectacles, her husband, Al Szasz, directed a truck of 4 tons that rolled above a board situated on her stomach. In other actions, Ada fought against a crocodile suffering several serious bites in jaw, arms and legs. Another her act consisted of lifting a horse that stood on a wood platform.
