India blocks more than 800 porn sitesCommunications ministry cracks down on adult sites amid ongoing legal debateEmailInternet service providers in India have blocked access to more than 800 pornographic websites, reportedly at the order of the government. TheHindustan Times, citing sources at Indias communications ministry, reports that ISPs were asked to block websites that were found to be spreading antisocial activities. Indian ISPs tell the newspaper that they received letters ordering the ban on Saturday, with the governments information technology secretary addingthat the ministry was acting under court directives. Other sites are reportedly under review.Free and open access to porn websites has been brought under check, a communications ministry spokesman tells Reuters . We dont want them to become a social nuisance.Indias Supreme Court declined to pass an interim ban on online pornography last month, following a petition brought by advocates who argued that crime against women was being fueled by easy access to porn. The court said it didnt have the authority to issue a ban, saying it would violate constitutionally protected personal freedoms, though it did agree with the petitioners call for greater control over adult sites, and the case is ongoing. There is no proper justification that they have given.News of the apparent ban began circulating on social media over the weekend, with users reporting that sites like YouPorn and Pornhub had been replaced with blank white pages. Others reported seeing a message in their browsers that read: Your requested URL has been blocked as per the directions received from Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. The full list of blacklisted sites, obtained by the Centre for Internet and Society think tank, includes 857 URLs.A communications ministry spokesman tells Financial Times that the restrictions are temporary, and that users with virtual private networks (VPNs) would still be able to access porn sites. It isnt that they are being banned lock, stock and barrel, the ministry said. The Supreme Court justice noted that free and open access to these websites.... should be controlled, but these sites will continue to be available through the mechanism of a VPN.The move drew swift outrage from Indian social media users, along with criticism from legal experts. Under the conservative government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has sought to tighten its control over the internet, raising concerns over free speech. There is no proper justification that they have given for banning all porn, rather than child porn or revenge porn or something like that, Pranesh Prakash, of the Centre for Internet and Society, tells Financial Times . The reaction is heavy handed, and has been done under the cloak of secrecy.Verge Video: What is the future of sex?

EmailThursday afternoon, something very unusual happened to superbigcocks.com. That site and 255 others many of them porn sites suddenly began dropping off the web. The servers showed no problems, but users from Russia to Hong Kong were typing the URLs into their browsers and getting blank pages. Something on the internet was getting in the way. That obstacle, as it turns out, was the state telecom of Iran. The country has long maintained an extensivebutscattershot web censorship system but on Thursday, it began blocking not just the sites, but the basic mechanisms of the web itself.Breaking the basic mechanism of the webThe national telecom had announced phony routes for each of the 256 sites, the internet equivalent of a fake street sign. For an internet service provider looking for the quickest way to a given IP, Irans new routes seemed like an easy shortcut and when they arrived at the blank page, browsers simply assumed the page was down. The resulting outage didnt affect the entire web, but anyone close enough to be tempted by the phony routes was drawn in. That list included Indias Bharti Airtel, Russias RETN, Indonesias Telekomunikasi and Hong Kongs Hutchison all major ISPs for their region.Among network operators, this trick is known as BGP hijacking, although its usually seen at a smaller and less haphazard scale. The attack exploits a longstanding vulnerability in the architecture of the web . By the rules of networking, any network can announce a route to any IP address essentially saying, if you want to get to the server for superbigcocks.com, head this way. Having a lot of those routes at once makes the internet efficient and robust, but it also makes it easy to spoof. If a network decides to announce a bad route, theres very little in place to stop it.The problem is that, while Irans national telecom has strict internal censorship rules, its also pivotal to the transit of data through the region, particularly for Omans central telecom, Omantel. Irans TIC transits over 4000 routes and announces about a tenth of those to Omantel, says Dyns Doug Madory, whos been tracking the incident closely. At that level, it isnt reasonable for someone at Omantel to check each new route.Roughly 28 hours after the blackouts began, networks finally began to block the routes, as can be seen on the readout above. However, the bad routes appear to still be circulating within Iran. Its still unclear what motivated the hijacking. Iran has typically used more reliable means to block content, whether using ISPlevel blocks or nationwide packet inspection. The sudden move to bogus traffic routing has puzzled observers like Collin Anderson, who studies Irans web censorship system.BGP is typically not the mechanism that is used for domestic censorship, so it doesnt align with a routine motivation, Anderson told The Verge. Its difficult to tell whether this was an accident or not.More From The Verge
