.... . .: 17 . 2015 .In this video we run down the history of the Toilet and poop. Time for the real Game of Thrones... where we walk you through an invention you have probably used more than your iPhone, unless you also use your iPhone on it. How did people poop in ancient rome and medieval England, and where did it all go? The answers will disturb you.Dont miss history, SUBSCRIBE http:bit.ly1U0izNEFollow us on TWITTER http:www.twitter.comlaughhistoryLike on FACEBOOK http:www.facebook.comlaughinghisto...ABOUT US:Join brothers Brandon and Nevin on their crazy trip through time as they dive into some of the weirdest (but true!) and most interesting bits of world history. Laughing Historically is a fun educational web show thats teacherclassroom friendly and great for kids of all ages!Terms:Ancient Rome a civilization that began on the Italian peninsula in 8th century BC, lasting until 476 AD. It expanded to be one of the largest empires in history.Medieval Ages In European history lasted from the 5th to the 15th century beginning with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and merged with the Renaissance.Toilet a sanitation fixture used for the disposal of human urine and feces.Chamber Pots a bowl shaped container, often with a lid, kept in the bedroom and used as a toilet at night.River Thames a river that flows through southern England, including London.Elizabeth I of England 15331603 was Queen of England from 1558 until her death. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen or Good Queen Bess, was the final monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, her reign is known as The Elizabethan Era.It is a truth universally acknowledged, that everybodyIn historypooped. In ancient times, the Romans built public underground sewer systems, which not only carried waste, but also drinking water,so It paid to be up stream. The romans used large, dividerfree public restrooms some with up to 50 toilets. Many people read prayers and protection spells to keep them safe from demons, rats biting their bums, or open flames that could flare up from methane pockets. In the middle ages, where you pooped largely depended on your class. Lower class people pooped in chamber pots aka jerry, guzunder, a po, thunder pot If you were really poor, a bucket. In medieval London it was illegal to empty these out the window (not that that stopped many people). Most people carried their full chamber pots to a nearby stream or river and emptied it there.Larger houses had attached latrines which drained into cesspits which were emptied by men called gongfermours or gong farmers. who would then carry the waste to the streams and rivers. The Gong Farmers of London would end their shift bathing in the River Thames, which was probably only slightly cleaner than themselves at least they were wellpaid. For the top of the Poopingladder, Castles featured rooms called Garderobes, which had literally a seat with a hole to the outside cut into it. Poop would drop right into the castle moat. When the tide was low, it would pile up above the water until it was flushed away into the river.Which was also drinking water. The word garderobe is french for Wardrobe. People would hang their clothes in these rooms, as the fleas and moths didnt like the smell. There was a job called The Groom of the Kings Stool, whose job was to wipe the kings bum when he was finished pooping. Naturally, this was a job of honor and only princes or boys of royalty were allowed to do it.With all this poop being throw around, you can imagine the smell literally everywhere. If you cant, think about this, Archaeologists have found medieval poop and it still stinks to this day. This past year they even found several 700 year old barrels unearthed in Denmark in the Werners Square. Boy, do we stink Brandon. Finally, in 1596, a man named John Harrington, who was actually an English poet, invented a flushing toilet for Queen Elizabeth the first. But it was so loud it scared her from using it. It did, however, become popular to call this new invention after its creator, John.By the 1850s over 400,000 tonnes of sewage were flushed into the River Thames each day around 150 million tonnes of poo a year.Eventually, in the 1880s, a man came along who invented the ballcock and many other patents, which helped silence the scary flushing toilet, leading to its widespread adoption his name?Thomas Crapper.FUN FACT:The US Navy has developed a way to vaporize on their vessels. The technology has been installed on their newest aircraft carrier the Gerald Ford Aircarft Carrier because he was a real stinky President.

A flush toilet bowl during the flushing actionTypical sound of a flush toiletThe focus of this article is a flush toilet that uses a mechanical flush from a water cistern that is above the toilet.Mechanical flush from a cistern edit A typical flush toilet is a vitreous, ceramic bowl containing water, plus plumbing to rapidly fill it with more water. The water in the toilet bowl is connected to a hollow drain pipe shaped like an upsidedown U connecting the drain. One side of the U channel is arranged as a hollow siphon tube longer than the water in the bowl is high. The siphon tube connects to the drain. The top of the upsidedown Ushaped drain pipe limits the height of the water in the bowl before it flows down the drain. If water is poured slowly into the bowl it simply flows over the rim of the upsidedown U and pours slowly down the drainthus the toilet does not flush. The standing water in the bowl acts as a barrier to sewer gas coming out of the sewer through the drain, and also as a receptacle for waste. Sewer gas is vented through a separate vent pipe attached to the sewer line. When a user flushes a toilet, a toilet flapper valve (not to be confused with a type of check valve ) opens and allows water from a reservoir tank to quickly enter the toilet bowl. This rapid influx from the tank causes the swirling water in the bowl to rapidly rise and fill the Ushaped inverted siphon tube mounted in the back of the toilet. This full siphon tube starts the toilets siphonic action . The siphon action quickly (47 seconds) pulls nearly all of the water and waste in the bowl and the onrushing tank water down the drainit flushes. When most of the water has drained out of the bowl, the continuous column of water up and over the bottom of the upsidedown Ushaped drain pipe (the siphon) is broken when air enters the siphon tube. The toilet then gives its characteristic gurgle as the siphonic action ceases and no more water flows out of the toilet. After flushing, the flapper valve in the water tank closes water lines and valves connected to the water supply refill the toilet tank and bowl. Then the toilet is again ready for use.At the top of the toilet bowl is a rim with many angled drain holes that are fed from the tank, which fill, rinse, and induce swirling in the bowl when it is flushed. Mounted above the toilet is a large holding tank with approximately 1.2 to 1.6 U.S. gallons (4.5 to 6.1L) of water in modern designs. This tank is built with a large drain 2.0 to 3.0 inches (5.08 to 7.62cm) diameter hole at its bottom covered by a flapper valve that allows the water to rapidly leave the holding tank. The plumbing is built to allow entry of the tanks water into the toilet in a very short period. This water pours through the holes in the rim and a siphon jet hole about 1.0 inch (2.54cm) diameter in the bottom of the toilet. Some designs use a large hole in the front of the rim to allow faster filling of the bowl.Manual flush (pour flush) edit Another variant of the flush toilet is the pourflush toilet. 5 This type of flush toilet has no cistern, but is flushed manually with a few litres of a small bucket. The flushing can use as little as 23 litres. 5 This type of toilet is common in many Asian countries. The toilet can be connected to one or two pits, in which case it is called a pour flush pit latrine or a twin pit pour flush pit latrine. It can also be connected to a septic tank .Manufacture edit Toilet with an elevated cistern of water and a chain attached to the tank to release water and flush the waste awayA toilets body is typically made from vitreous china, which starts out as an aqueous suspension of various minerals called a slip . It takes about 20 kilograms (44lb) of slip to make a toilet. citation needed This slip is poured into the space between plaster of Paris molds. The toilet bowl, rim, tank and tank lid require separate molds. The molds are assembled and set up for filling and the slipfilled molds sit for about an hour after filling. This allows the plaster molds to absorb moisture from the slip, which makes it semisolid next to the mold surfaces but lets it remain liquid further from the surface of the molds. Then, the workers remove plugs to allow any excess liquid slip to drain from the cavities of the mold (this excess slip is recycled for later use). The drainedout slip leaves hollow voids inside the fixture, using less material to keep it both lighter and easier to fire in a kiln . This molding process allows the formation of intricate internal waste lines in the fixture the drains hollow cavities are poured out as slip.At this point, the toilet parts without their molds look like and are about as strong as soft clay. After about one hour the top core mold (interior of toilet) is removed. The rim mold bottom (which includes a place to mount the holding tank) is removed, and it then has appropriate slanted holes for the rinsing jets cut, and the mounting holes for tank and seat are punched into the rim piece. Valve holes for rapid water entry into the toilet are cut into the rim pieces. The exposed top of the bowl piece is then covered with a thick slip and the stilluncured rim is attached on top of the bowl so that the bowl and hollow rim are now a single piece. The bowl plus rim is then inverted, and the toilet bowl is set upside down on the top rim mold to hold the pieces together as they dry. Later, all the rest of the mold pieces are removed. As the clay body dries further it hardens more and continues to shrink. After a few hours, the casting is selfsupporting, and is called greenware .After the molds are removed, workers use hand tools and sponges to smooth the edges and surface of the greenware, and to remove the mold joints or roughness: this process is called fettling. For large scale production pieces, these steps may be automated. The parts are then left outside or put in a warm room to dry, before going through a dryer at about 93C (199F), for about 2036 hours. 6After the surfaces are smoothed, the bowls and tanks are sprayed with glaze of various kinds to get different colors. This glaze is designed to shrink and contract at the same rate as the greenware while undergoing firing. After being sprayed with glaze, the toilet bowls, tanks, and lids are placed in stacks on a conveyor belt or car that slowly goes through a large kiln to be fired . The belt slowly moves the glazecovered greenware into a tunnel kiln, which has different temperature zones inside it starting at about 200C (392F) at the front, increasing towards the middle to over 1,200C (2,190F) degrees and exiting around out 90C (194F). During the firing in the kiln, the greenware and glaze are vitrified as one solid finished unit. Transiting the kiln takes glazecovered greenware around 2340 hours. After the pieces are removed from the kiln and fully cooled, they are inspected for cracks or other defects. Then, the flushing mechanism may be installed on a onepiece toilet. On a twopiece toilet with a separate tank, the flushing mechanism may only be placed into the tank, with final assembly at installation.A twopiece attaching seat and toilet bowl lid are typically mounted over the bowl to allow covering the toilet when it is not in use and to provide seating comfort. The seat may be installed at the factory, or the parts may be sold separately and assembled by a plumbing distributor or the installer. 6Water usage edit The bowl drain is visible at the rear of the bowl, connected to the waste pipe. The amount of water used by conventional flush toilets usually make up a significant portion of personal daily water usage: for example, it could be as much as 50 liters (13U.S.gal) liters per person per day if a person flushes his or her toilet five times per day with 10 liters per flush.Modern lowflush toilet designs allow the use of much less water per flush 4.5 to 6 liters (1.2 to 1.6U.S.gal) per flush. citation needed Some users do not flush their toilets after urination, in order to save water. 7Dual flush toilets allow the user to select between a flush for urine or feces, saving a significant amount of water over conventional units. The flush handle on some of these toilets is pushed up for one kind of flush and down for the other. 8 In other designs, a segmented flush pushbutton is used pressing the smaller section releases less water.Flush toilets may, if plumbed for it, use greywater (water previously used for washing dishes, laundry and bathing) for flushing rather than potable water (drinking water). Heads (on ships) are typically flushed with seawater .Flushing mechanism edit The flushing mechanism provides a large flow of water into the bowl (which is described later in this article). The mechanism usually incorporates one or more parts of the following designs:Tank fill valve edit The ballcock or float valve is often used to regulate the filling of a tank or cistern. When the fluid level drops, the float descends, levering the valve opening and allowing more fluid to enter. Once the float reached the full position, the arm presses the valve shut again.Tank fill valves are found in all tankstyle toilets. The valves are of two main designs: the sidefloat design and the concentricfloat design. The sidefloat design has existed for over a hundred years. The concentric design has only existed since 1957, but is gradually becoming more popular than the sidefloat design. The sidefloat design uses a float on the end of a lever to control the fill valve. The float is usually shaped like a ball, so the mechanism is called a ballvalve or a ballcock. Cock is a term for valve see, for example, stopcock . The float was originally made from copper sheet, but it is now usually plastic. The float is located to one side of the main valve tower at the end of a rod or arm. As the sidefloat rises, so does the sidefloatarm. The arm connects to the fill valve that blocks the water flow into the toilet tank, and thus maintains a constant level in the tank. One type of concentric float valve. The concentric float valve opens when the fluid level is low, allowing more fluid to enter (Figure 1). When the fluid level returns to the full level, the valve is shut (Figure 2).The newer concentricfloat fill valve consists of a tower which is encircled by a plastic float assembly. Operation is otherwise the same as a sidefloat fill valve, even though the float position is somewhat different. By virtue of its more compact layout, interference between the float and other obstacles (tank insulation, flush valve, and so on) is greatly reduced, thus increasing reliability. The concentricfloat fill valve is also designed to signal to users automatically when there is a leak in the tank, by making much more noise when a leak is present than the older style sidefloat fill valve, which tends to be nearly silent when a slow leak is present.Tank style with flapperflush valve edit A traditional gravity toilet tank concluding the flush cycle. As the water level in the tank drops, the flush valve flapper falls back to the bottom, stopping the main flow to the flush tube. Because the tank water level has yet to reach the fill line, water continues to flow from the tank and bowl fill tubes. When the water again reaches the fill line, the float will release the fill valve shaft and water flow will stop.1. float, 2. fill valve, 3. lift arm, 4. tank fill tube, 5. bowl fill tube, 6. flush valve flapper, 7. overflow tube, 8. flush handle, 9. chain, 10. fill line, 11. fill valve shaft, 12. flush tubeIn a tankbased system, the storage tank (or cistern) collects between 6 and 17 litres (1.3 and 3.7impgal 1.6 and 4.5USgal) of water over a period of time. This system is suitable for locations plumbed with 12 inch (13mm) or 38 inch (9.5mm) water pipes. These small diameter pipes cannot supply water quickly enough to flush the toilet the tank is needed to supply a large volume of water in a short time. The storage tank is kept full by a tank fillvalve. The storage tank is usually mounted directly upon the bowl, although some tanks are mounted on the wall a few feet above the bowl in an attempt to increase the flush water pressure as it enters the bowl. Tanks near the ceiling are flushed by means of a dangling pull chain , often with a large ornate handle, connected to a flush lever on the cistern itself. Pulling the chain remains a British euphemism for flushing the toilet, although this type of tank or cistern is becoming rare. A similar German expression is Wasser ziehen (to pull water). In tanks using a flapperflush valve, the outlet at the bottom of the tank is covered by a buoyant (plastic or rubber) cover, or flapper, which is held in place against a fitting (the flush valve seat) by water pressure. To flush the toilet, the user pushes a lever, which lifts the flush valve from the valve seat. The valve then floats clear of the seat, allowing the tank to empty quickly into the bowl. As the water level drops, the floating flush valve descends back to the bottom of the tank and covers the outlet pipe again. This system is common in homes in the US and in continental Europe. Recently this flush system has also become available in the UK due to a change in regulations.Tank style with siphonflush valve edit This system, invented by Albert Giblin and common in the UK , uses a storage tank similar to that used in the flapperflushvalve system above. 9 This flush valve system is sometimes referred to as a valveless system, since no traditional type of valve is required. Some would argue, however, that any system of regulating the flow of a fluid is still technically a valve. In the siphonflushvalve system, the user pushes a lever or button, forcing the water up into the tank siphon passageway which then empties the water in the tank into the bowl. The advantage of a siphon over the flush valve is that it has no sealing washers that can wear out and cause leaks, so it is favoured in places where there is a need to conserve water.Until recently, the use of siphontype cisterns was mandatory in the UK to avoid the potential waste of water by millions of leaking toilets with flapper valves but due to EU harmonisation the regulations have changed. These valves can sometimes be more difficult to operate than a flapperbased flush valve because the lever requires more torque than a flapperflushvalve system. This additional torque required at the tank lever is due to the fact that a user must forcefully lift a certain amount of water up into the siphon passageway in order to initiate the siphon action in the tank.Older installations, known as high suite combinations, used a highlevel cistern (tank), fitted above head height, that was operated by pulling a chain hanging down from a lever attached to the cistern. When more modern closecoupled cistern and bowl combinations were first introduced, these were first referred to as low suite combinations. Modern versions have a neaterlooking lowlevel cistern with a lever that the user can reach directly, or a closecoupled cistern that is even lower down and integrated with the bowl. In recent decades the close coupled tankbowl combination has become the most popular residential system, as it has been found by ceramic engineers that improved waterway design is a more effective way to enhance the bowls flushing action than high tank mounting.Dual flush toilets edit Main article: Dual flush toiletDual flush versions of this design are now widely available. They have one level of water for liquid waste and a higher level for solid waste . In countries such as Australia , Israel , Singapore or Germany which either have limitations on water consumption or where people are keen to save water, dual flush toilets are now common in both homes and public washrooms.Tank style with highpressure or pressureassist valve edit Sloan pressure vesselThis system uses water main pressure to prepressurize a plastic tank located inside what otherwise appears to be the more typical ceramic flush tank. A flush cycle begins each time a user flushes the bowl. After a user flushes and the water in the prepressurized tank has finished emptying into the bowl, the outlet valve in the plastic tank shuts. Then the high pressure water from the main refills the plastic tank. Inside the tank is an airfilled balloonlike rubber diaphragm. As the higherpressure mains water enters the tank, the rubber diaphragm is also pressurized and shrinks accordingly.During flushing, the compressed air inside the diaphragm pushes the water into the bowl at a flow rate which is significantly higher than a tank style gravityflow toilet. This system requires less water than a gravityflow toilet or alternatively can be more effective for a similar amount of water. Pressureassist toilets are sometimes found in both private (single, multiple, and lodging) bathrooms as well as light commercial installations (such as offices). They seldom clog, but the pressurized tanks require replacement about once every 10 years. They also tend to be noisier a possible concern for residential settings. Pressureassist toilets from several companies use 1.4 US gallons (5.3l) to 1.0 US gallon (3.8l) per flush.New toilets that use similar pressureassist technology along with a bowl and trapway designed to enhance the siphon effect use only 0.8 US gallons (3.0l) per flush, or 0.5 US gallons (1.9l) 0.95 US gallons (3.6l) for dual flush models. 10 This design is also much quieter than other pressureassist or flushometer toilets.Tankless style with highpressure (flushometer) valve edit Main article: FlushometerIn 1906, William Sloan first made his flushometer style toilet flush valve, incorporating his patented design, 11 available to the public. The design proved to be very popular and efficient, and remains so to this day. Flushometer toilet flush valves are still often installed in commercial restrooms, and are frequently used for both toilets and urinals. Since they have no tank, they have zero recharge time, and can be used immediately by the next user of the toilet. They can be easily identified by their distinctive chrome pipework, and by the absence of a toilet tank or cistern, wherever they are employed. Some flushometer models require the user to either depress a lever or press a button, which in turn opens a flush valve allowing mainspressure water to flow directly into the toilet bowl or urinal. Other flushometer models are electronically triggered, using an infrared sensor to initiate the flushing process. Typically, on electronically triggered models, an override button is provided in case the user wishes to manually trigger flushing earlier. Some electronically triggered models also incorporate a true mechanical manual override which can be used in the event of the failure of the electronic system. In retrofit installations, a selfcontained batterypowered or hardwired unit can be added to an existing manual flushometer to flush automatically when a user departs.Once a flushometer valve has been flushed, and after a preset interval, the flushometer mechanism closes the valve and stops the flow. The flushometer system requires no storage tank, but requires a high volume of water in a very short time. Thus a 34 inch (22 mm) pipe at minimum, or preferably a 1inch (29 mm) pipe, must be used, but as the high volume is used only for a short duration, very little water is used for the amount of flushing efficacy delivered. Water main pressures must be above 30 pounds per square inch (2.1bar). While the higher water pressure employed by a flushometer valve does scour the bowl more efficiently than a gravitydriven system, and while fewer blockages typically occur as a result of this higher water pressure, flushometer systems still require approximately the same amount of water as a gravity system to operate (1.6 gpf).Flushing with nonpotable water sources edit

GeekBomb: The History of Poop in the MoviesPosted on Monday, February 9th, 2009 by Kevin KellyEveryone poops. Its a truism that you cant deny, and theres even an entire book on the subject. In fact, theres a whole slew of books in that department, ranging from Whats Your Poo Telling You? to It Hurts When I Poop: A Story For Children Who Are Scared To Use The Potty . Which based on the title alone scares me, and Im an adult. For some reason, from childhood to our adult years, toilet humor amuses us for some reason, and that means weve seen plenty of it in the movies. In fact, Oscar nominee Slumdog Millionaire has a pretty extensive and memorable poop scene in it, and we hope that somewhere theres a propmaster or special effects technician who is proud to say, I made the poop in Slumdog and that someone is buying them a beer. Since the nominations came out, Ive been thinking about all the other memorable poop scenes in movies, for better or for worse, and thought Id round up some of the best for a Monday morning GeekBomb to get you going. Have your daily dose of fiber and dive in after the break.Toilets in TelevisionEven though everyone shares this body bodily function, censors havent wanted to admit it. In fact, the first toilet that was ever going to be seen on television was in the Leave it to Beaver 1957 pilot episode Captain Jack, but the FCC ruled that they couldnt show a toilet, mostly because people in the 1950s apparently didnt go to the bathroom. So, a compromise was reached in which Beaver could show the toilet tank, which Wally and the Beave were using to house a baby alligator, but they couldnt show the actual toilet. So Captain Jack was shelved for a couple of weeks, and Its A Small World became the pilot episode. The first time a toilet was heard on television was in 1971, in the pilot episode of All in the Family. CBS also ran a disclaimer before the show that was wiped offscreen to the sound of a flushing toilet, really opening the door to the bathroom wide. So, it only took 14 years to go from the first appearance of a toilet tank, to the sound of one flushing. Theres some real censorship progress.PsychoIn the movies, as far as my research has turned up, the first time a flushing toilet was actually shown in a movie was in 1960 with Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho. Screenwriter Joseph Stefano was adamant that he wanted a flushing toilet in the movie (who knows why), so Hitchcock said he had to show it in the writing. In the script, Marion (Janet Leigh) adds up the stolen money on a piece of paper, and then flushes it down the toilet. Strangely enough, the first flushing cinematic toilet was upstaged by another bathroom feature: the shower.Pink FlamingosJohn Waters 1971 movie Pink Flamingos is considered a classic by some, and a travesty by others, and it famously features actress Divine eating a piece of dog poop. Yes, real dog poop. Waters reportedly wanted to make a sequel to this movie and have a scene where Divine poops and a dog eats it, but since heshe died, moviegoing audiences will just have to imagine that scene in their heads. According to Water, they fed the dog steak for three days before the scene was filmed, and boy I just cant go on for this one. My stomach is churning too much as it is. Watch at your own risk.Airplane!1980s Airplane! is still such a groundbreaking film for humor, and even today youre hard pressed not to go through a week without hearing someone quote a line from this movie. One of my faves is when facing a looming deadline, Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue! Not quoted nearly as much, but definitely a memorable poop scene is when Ted Striker says When Kramer hears about this, the shits gonna hit the fan! And then, the shit does indeed literally hit the fan.Caddyshack1980 also gave us the extremely classic scene with the Baby Ruth bar in the swimming pool. Bill Murrays Carl is in the process of scrubbing and disinfecting the entire pool after a swimmer finds a floater, only to discover its a candy bar. Im not sure why the sight of a Baby Ruth bar floating through the water accompanied by the Jaws soundtrack is so funny, but this scene was one of the funniest things I can remember when I first saw this years ago. My childhood friends and I thought this was comedy gold, and its still hard to top today.Weird ScienceWhats the ultimate revenge on a painintheass older brother? Having him turned into a creature made of poop is probably pretty high up on the list, and thats what happens to Bill Paxtons Chet in Weird Science. Its a fine fit for this flattopped pest, who greets his brother with lines like Whats up turdbrain! and Dont smart mouth me you wormy little shit! Sadly, Lisa doesnt leave him in this state, and he reverts back to Bill Pullman as normal by the end of the movie. If youre a Chet fan, you probably wont want to continue living without snapping up one of these tshirts inspired by his quotes .The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the DesertLong before Guy Pearce was in Memento or L.A. Confidential, he was vamping as a drag queen Felicia in this 1994 movie. Heshe famously wears a reliquary of sorts, similar to the one Hellboy gives to Abe in Hellboy. Although instead of the knucklebone of the saint, this one contains something entirely different. Felicia was backstage during an ABBA show, and when band member Agnetha Fltskog exited the bathroom, heshe went in for a souvenir. This prompts Terence Stamps Bernadette to remark, What are you telling me? This is an ABBA turd? Of course, it is. Hopefully this isnt based on a true story.PleasantvilleIn a nod to Leave It To Beaver and all the classic 1950s television shows that couldnt show a toilet onscreen, this movie has Reese Witherspoon going into the restroom at the local diner, only to find an empty stall. Thats right, theres no toilet at all, which just reinforces the fact that if you were in black and white and on television, you just werent supposed to go to the bathroom at all. When everyone in Pleasantville begins turning colors, do you think they needed to install toilets? Inquiring minds want to know.DogmaKevin Smiths Dogma features yet another monster entire out of poop, a la Weird Science, but this one is a demon made of all the poop from everyone who died at Golgotha, which is where the Romans used to crucify people. While hes pretty vile, and voiced by Ethan Suplee, hes easily defeated by Silent Bob and a can of air freshener. Its not the last time youd see a monster made from fecal matter. In fact, 2003s Monsturd was about a monster made entire out of poop that terrorized people. I shi er, kid you not.TrainspottingAnother Danny Boyle film, trainspotting has not just one, but two (how appropriate) poop scenes in it. The most memorable one is undoubtedly Ewan McGregor diving face first into the filthiest toilet in Scotland in order to retrieve two opium suppositories that hes accidentally lost. However, Spuds breakfast scene where he wrestles his girlfriends mother over a dirty sheet comes in a very close number two. If youre interested, the music when Ewan dives in is Brian Enos Deep Blue Day off of his excellent Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks album, which is highly recommended.Synecdoche, New YorkThis wonderfully eccentric Charlie Kaufman film features a couple of shots of poop, and this is probably the only time youll ever see Philip Seymour Hoffman prodding feces with a wooden spoon. So, if youve been looking for that in your moviegoing experience, look no further. Hes convinced that something is wrong with his body, so hes been checking things out closely. Even his young daughter has problems of her own, and has bright green bowel movements of her own, that the audience is also treated to. Dont write this movie off despite this description, however. Its very quirky and definitely worth seeing.Zack and Miri Make A PornoZack and Miri features a pretty graphic scene involving porn star Katie Morgan, actor Jason Mewes, and poor cameraman Jeff Anderson. If you havent seen the movie, you might want to avoid the spoilers below, but those of you who did catch it remember this pretty well. Morgan drops a big hint earlier when she tells Seth Rogen that shes really constipated, but that anal sex really loosens her up. And she sure isnt kidding about that. At both screenings I saw of this, audiences were laughing too hard to hear Andersons line Can you believe THIS shit?! which actually is pretty hard to believe.Nick and Norahs Infinite PlaylistThis movie practically channels Trainspotting when Norahs drunk girlfriend Caroline accidentally loses her beloved piece of gum in an extremely wellused New York city subway toilet, and decided to retrieve it after contemplating it for a long time. According to director Peter Sollett, he wanted actress Ari Graynor to drag that scene out as long as possible, because the audience is hanging on the will she or wont she moment. Well, she eventually does, and she picks the gum and and the chews the well, you get it.Slumdog MillionaireThis is the movie that inspired this GeekBomb, and you really need to catch it while its still in theaters. The scene in question probably contains the most amount of poop out of any of these others, and its fairly graphic as well. Suffice it to say, you dont want to be shoving anything chocolate into your mouth when this moment comes onscreen. Despite all this, the actual moment involves a little boy exiting an outhouse via the hole below, landing in a huge pile of excrement, and dashing off to get the autograph of his favorite Bollywood star, Amitabh Bachchan. Hes successful, despite being covered from head to toe in poop, and triumphantly celebrates his deed afterwards.Honorable Mentions and AddendumWhile there are a huge number of movies with poop scenes in them, I tried to shudder only include ones where you could actually see the poop. Yes, its disgusting, I know. See what a scene from an Oscar nominated movie can do to you? Granted, the Caddyshack scene doesnt contain real poop (none of these probably do, except Pink Flamingos), and Pleasantville literally doesnt show a bathroom at all, but theyre in line with the spirit of this piece.Having said that, there are tons of movies that I omitted because they didnt fit the criteria. Films like Harold Kumar Go To White Castle, Van Wilder, Along Came Polly, Dumb and Dumber and even The Goonies all contain memorable bathroom moments, but you (thankfully?) cant see anything. Or course, then theres stuff like the deleted scenes from Team America, which I just could not include after Pink Flamingos. I was having enough trouble keeping my dinner down. Likewise, I havent seen the film Hunger, which apparently contains plenty of poop as well. Ill have to put it on my list.Strangely enough, research this was harder than youd think as well, as most film institutions seem to be mired in the same 1950s mindset. Hello, American Film Institute? Im researching a story about the history of poop in movies, and I was wondering click. Hello, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? Im researching an article click. Thankfully, there were some helpful spots on the internet that helped make this possible, like The Movie PoopScene Database . If youre looking for a poop scene in a movie, this is your best bet.
